“Unsung Hero” Scholarship Application Information
Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center will be offering scholarships of up to 80% of the cost programs or courses for individuals seeking skills to become eligible for employment in specific technical fields, or to enhance their current employment status. Recipients are required to cover the balance of the program/course fee unless there are extraordinary circumstances.
This unique scholarship program is designed to assist individuals needing financial aid to obtain technical training from Cincinnati State Workforce Development Center, and to enhance the skills of the region’s workforce.
Scholarships are funded through charitable contributions from organizations and individuals that share our goal of developing a highly skilled workforce that meets the employment and economic development needs of the region.
Applicant Requirements:
To be considered for a scholarship, a student must reside in the Greater Cincinnati Tri-State Region, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, demonstrate interest in training courses offered by Cincinnati State Workforce Development Center, and be eligible for employment in the field of study which may include background and drug testing. Unemployed or under-employed workers with demonstrated financial need will be given first priority.
Scholarship Type:
Scholarships are merit and need-based and are non-renewable. There will be a tuition waiver provided through the College’s Financial Aid Office.
Deadline:
In order to address the unique needs of our workforce applicants, applications will be reviewed periodically, on an as needed basis. Recipients may be required to provide proof of employability in the specific field of study prior to receipt of an award. Scholarship awards will be paid directly to Cincinnati State Workforce Development Center during the registration process.
To receive payment of scholarship funds, the student must enroll at the Cincinnati State Workforce Development Center in Evendale, Ohio.
Application Materials:
To be accepted for consideration, applicants must submit ALL REQUIRED ITEMS IN ONE PACKAGE as listed below (only the reference letters and transcripts/certifications may be sent separately, if necessary), all must be submitted at least thirty (30) days prior to a program/course start date.
Incomplete application packages will be not be reviewed and candidates will be immediately disqualified from judging with no response.
The following items must be submitted to be considered:
- Application Form (click here for application)
- Statement of Employability – Employment eligibility in some fields is established by law, ordinance, statute or commonly accepted business practices. WDC Business Managers will be used to assist in this determination based on the field of study.
- Statement of Need - On a single sheet of paper (one-sided, 12pt. Times New Roman font), discuss any other sources of funding you have applied for, your financial situation, and list, if any, other training you have taken during the past two years.
- Copy of Transcript - High school transcript (either official or unofficial). May be mailed separately, if necessary.
- Two Letters of Recommendation - Two letters of recommendation from employers, potential employers or individuals (not including relatives) familiar with the student’s preparation, passion for learning, financial situation and reason for pursuing training offered by Cincinnati State Workforce Development Center.
Letters must include the recommender’s phone number and e-mail address and the full name of the student for whom the recommendation is written. Letters may be included in student application packet or sent separately by mail or email to Sharon.Timon@cincinnatisate.edu . - Essay - An essay written by student applicant, no more than 500 words, double spaced, typewritten, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, in response to this topic: Describe how the training will contribute to your employability and subsequently your professional career. Why is the requested training important to the economic development of the Greater Cincinnati Tri-State area?
Note: The application items of most importance to our judges will be: Essay (40%), Letters of Recommendation (25%), and Statement of Need (15%). Other factors and application items comprise the remaining 20%.
Sharing Success
Note: if a scholarship is awarded, the recipient agrees to share the progress of the training including final grades, examination or certification results; in addition the recipient agrees to share employment information including job placement/organization and/or promotional opportunities which result from the training for a period of two years; the recipient will allow the Workforce Development Center to share their successes and testimonials.

Application Submission Deadline:
All of the above items must be postmarked no later than thirty (30) days prior to a program/course start date. A single, complete student application packet is preferred, but letters of recommendation and transcripts will be accepted separately from the student application packet, if necessary (check applicable box on application form).
